More from the Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Raphael Varane is working really hard. He had a couple of weeks of good training. He will fit in at Manchester United.

  3. Solskjaer takes aim at Ferdinand commentspublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

Wolves v Man Utd (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Manchester United

By the sounds of it the Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is not too happy with his former team-mate Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand gave a bit of stick earlier in the week, saying the injury-hit defender should have left the club "ages ago".

"Phil has a horrible 20 months with injuries," Solskjaer said.

"Rio should have asked why Phil has not been here. He is a no fuss, get on with it type of guy. Phil is not 30 yet. He has battled against a knee injury and never done anything but give everything for the club.

"I have not said too much about the injury. He gets his head down. Just wants to get back fit. I was out for two years with a knee injury. I know how he has felt, you are embarrassed at times coming in. Now is not the time for me to throw him in. A month or six weeks he will be there.

"Great there is light at the end of the tunnel."

  4. 'Ronaldo knows we are here' - Solskjaerpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

    Now for the CR7 question...

"I don’t want to speculate about Cristiano, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"You have to read a lot about yourself. Lets see what happens. Any manager is always looking for a little bit more but I am happy with the squad we have got.

Never comfortable as a manager. The chemistry is there. I am very happy with what we have.

"Don’t want to speculate too much. Cristiano Ronaldo is a legend of this club. I played with him. He almost retired me. Let’s see what happens.

"He is probably the greatest player of all time with [Lionel] Messi. I didn’t think Cristiano would leave Juventus. There has been speculation. We have always had a good communication. He knows what we feel about him. If he is going to move he knows we are here."

"Jesse [Lingard], I see him as a Manchester United player. Had a very good pre-season. Would have 100% started the first game.

"Mason [Greenwood is on the right track. [II have] Spoken to Gareth [Southgate]. He sees him as an England forward. Very comfortable with the way he wants to manage it."

"They have a way of playing, they play very open but they are a tough outfit and they are showing again they're up for it.

"Our fans have always been important and stood by us through the ups and downs and I think they will continue to do that, It's another home game and a chance to perform in front of our fans with their backing."

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has been talking to the press and he got things going by giving an update on his squad.

"We think we have better news with [Matej] Vydra and [Ashley] Westwood, they have both been on the grass today, so hopefully two bodies back in the thinking."

On Aaron Lennon's return to the club, Dyche adds: "I didn't want him to leave in the first place.

"He's fit and well, he played a lot of games last season in Turkey and he knows the group and what we're about, so it's good to have him back."

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Thomas Tuchel's style of football: "What he did at Chelsea is exceptional, I was never in doubt he would have a massive impact. Not even he would have expected it to happen that quickly. He won the Uefa coach of the year and really deserved it.

"The combination of financial wealth and football knowledge is always a threat for us, what they are doing is really good. Thomas is an exceptional manager and coach all my respect."

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on midfield options: "Gini Wijnaldum played a lot of games for us, an incredible, top player. I have watched him for PSG and have to get used to that. We miss him on the pitch and dressing room too.

"We lost a midfielder and if we count that there is not something missing. If Gini was still here then Harvey Elliott might not have played this game (against Burnley). Curtis Jones in 20 years old and can, will and has to make the next step.

"Naby Keita did not play the full season as expected but we won big games with him. Would he have played if Gini was still here? Maybe not. We have Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho. So that is the situation and there is no need to buy a midfielder just because he is on the market.

"If you think about it, there is no real need. If there was a player available who would really improve us, I would go for him. I promise."

  12. 'Robbo is an animal'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson: "I am really happy with how Kostas Tsimikas has performed in the last two games and the whole of pre-season, he had a tough first year and I told him it was not the plan to bring in a Greek player and not play him.

"He had to adapt and our defensive line had to get changed every week too. Now he is in the best moment and it is great, we have a long season ahead.

"For this game, Andrew Robertson has been in training since last week and there was no need to rush him back. We have two really good left-backs and that was always the idea to have that.

"Robbo is an animal, works really hard and having these two options is really great."

  13. 'It is not a business of the future'published at 13:24 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Cristiano Ronaldo's possible move to Manchester City: "I watched that like a football supporter and it is not about me to judge that. If other clubs can do this, it is not a business of the future. It is not now and immediately.

"That is how some clubs are working and that is fine. There must be different ways, a team two or three years later and you need success. it is nice if you can win trophies, but even with the best squad in the world it is not possible every year.

"You need to make sure you develop as a team and club and that is what we did."

  14. Postpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on possible transfers: "Do I expect a busy four days for us? Not really, but you never know.

"How much does it (signings from other clubs) change things? The options did not get worse for some team, that is clear. There are so many different reason ways to win a football game, it is not all about bringing in new players.

"We brought in Ibrahima Konate, he was not a bargain and cost money, but all these offensive attacking players other clubs are signing is something they thought they needed. They had the resources to do it. We will not use that as any kind of excuse and go for it with all we have.

"I have no time to look at other clubs and think how will they line up. When we play them that is what we will do."

  15. 'A must watch game'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on facing Chelsea: "I expect a very difficult game for both teams, there is not an easy way through any line and both teams are very well organised. It will be a big fight and it is one of these games which I would watch 100% if I was not involved. It is a must watch game.

"Chelsea are in a very good moment, won the Champions League, played an incredible last half of the season since Thomas Tuchel came in and now have brought Romelu Lukaku in. It is a tough opponent but we are not in the worst moment and hopefully we can show that."

There is not much space between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pep Guardiola speaking ahead of their weekend games.

Both are likely to be asked about Cristiano Ronaldo I would imagine - both also have an interest in the release of players for international duty in red list countries.

And both - clearly - have matches at the weekend.
