  2. 'We left everything out there'published at 23:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    FT: Northern Ireland 1-2 Slovakia

Northern Ireland’s Stuart Dallas speaking to Sky Sports: “Difficult night – I always say it’s hard to sum up how you feel straight after a game and there was so much at stake tonight. We left everything on the pitch that’s all we can ask for, all of us on and off the pitch we were all together and left everything out there and unfortunately it wasn’t enough.Sometimes this happens in football and tonight we were on the wrong end of it.

“We knew we had to be patient and that we would get a chance to get back in the game. We had a bit of luck but momentum as building and we got back into the game. Kyle [Lafferty] hit the post and it’s fine margins because we’re the width of a post away from going through and if that goes in the game is over. We’ve got to use this feeling to our advantage and finish the Nations League as strong as we can and take it from there.

“We don’t point fingers that’s one thing we don’t do is blame anyone and that’s got us this far and got us success in the past but these things happen in football and we’re not robots, we’re only humans."

On his injury: “Knock to my elbow and arm – you don’t want to leave the pitch certainly in a game of this magnitude you do everything you can to stay on the pitch but I’ll be fine for the next game, don’t worry.”

  5. 'Lafferty wants to do well for his country'published at 22:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    FT: Northern Ireland 1-2 Slovakia

More from Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough: "It was a mix-up for the first goal and the second during extra time when the middle of the park, you know, they broke through, and it hit Jonny's [Evans] backside! You talk about the rub of the green and it's not. You have to congratulate them [Slovakia] on their finishing for the two goals. That's the way games go. Tight contest.

"There's no blame on him [Bailey Peacock-Farrell]. I don't even know if it catches Jonny's foot. He couldn't keep it out."

On Kyle Lafferty playing following the passing away of his sister: "It shows the magnitude of the guy that wants to do so well for his country. To put that behind him, for it be so tough for somebody, to make that decision so soon after such a sad loss... His character is there for everybody to see.

"George Saville has dealt with difficult things coming in. Stuart Dallas, we don't know whether he's done something to his arm but he doesn't want to come off! I can't ask anymore from them.

"There may be five or six that are struggling. We need to pick the bones out of it and there's a game in a few days' time that we have to be ready for and prepare for. There's no reason why we can't go again in the next campaign and that's the World Cup."

  6. 'That's the worst I've felt'published at 22:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    FT: Northern Ireland 1-2 Slovakia

Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough speaking to Sky Sports: "There's not a great deal you can say. They gave us absolutely everything. We couldn't have asked for more effort. The game plan was put the ball in the box as much as possible and we did that.

"That's the worst I've felt after a game for sure. The players are a credit to work with. They didn't know how to lay down and die. It's tough for me to have any consolation words.

"Our first-half performance was excellent. At half-time it was more of the same. We were in the ascendancy for long periods and not giving away too many chances. Without looking back at it, I felt fairly comfortable."

    FT: Northern Ireland 1-2 Slovakia

Slovakia have won for the first time in 2020, drawing twice and losing three times since beating Azerbaijan last November.

Northern Ireland have lost three consecutive home matches for the first time since September 2011-February 2012.

They have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 matches, at home to Netherlands last November.

Juraj Kucka’s opener was his third goal of Slovakia’s Euro 2020 qualification campaign - the joint-most of any player for the side along with Marek Hamsik and Robert Bozenik. It was his first goal for the national side since October 2019 when he netted against Wales.

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on 鶹Լ Radio Ulster

Disappointing - I don't think Northern Ireland played well enough to win the match. They got a reprieve to get into extra time with two and a half minutes left. Even in extra time they offered nothing going forward. They couldn't come back from that second goal. Everything seemed to be coming from Jonny Evans tonight but apart from that it's worrying that we can't see where the goals are going to come from.
