Will England play Matt Parkinson? Jack Leach hasn't done anything wrong and I'm not saying he doesn't have a future with England but what's the point of bringing the younger lads if you're not going to play them?

More from Joe Root to Sky Sports: "I can't fault the effort levels. We were trying to create pressure by bowling maidens when there wasn't much in the surface. There were a few half chances that slipped away from us.

"We have to give credit to the oppositon who played very well on this surface.

"It's important to see how the bowlers pull up as there has been a big workload."

New Zealand's Neil Wagner talking to Test Match Special: "Everybody dug in and played an exceptional part, from the batting, bowling and fielding, everybody contributed and that’s what we love about this side.

"It was nice to not be a one-trick pony, and adapt to conditions today with pitching it up further than digging it in. The bowling effort was exceptional.

"I thought all the England batsman played pretty well to be honest. They showed a lot of fight and grit, we knew with a little bit more wear and tear the pitch would go up and down. All the credit has to go to BJ [Watling] and Mitchell Santner, it was exceptional batting to put us in that position and set up the game for us.

"BJ Watling is just a fighter, even behind the stumps he’s always positive. He’s the heart and soul of this team, he’s an absolute legend and champion."

More from Joe Root on Sky Sports: "The key is not to look too deeply into it. Trying to bat longer will not happen overnight. It's a mindset thing - we have to learn from mistakes like this game and move on quicky. If we can do that, we will improve rapidly.

"The first innings was a big missed opportunity. They had a guy go get a double hundred and another support with a hundred. We have to do what we did well for longer."

More from Kane Williamson to TMS: "Batting second meant the effort had to be huge and that meant batting for 200 overs. It wasn’t the initial focus, we knew that was a long way away but for guys to the make right decisions for that long was a great effort against a very good bowling attack.

"It was a great game of cricket to be a part of. It was an outstanding effort for our games against a very tough England side. We’ll have to go to Hamilton and execute our plans."

On Trent Boult's injury:"He's a bit sore, he will go for a scan tomorrow and that’s all we know at the moment."

New Zealand never got tired of being patient and watchful. England did that for the first day but didn't carry it on, New Zealand just did it for longer.

England will want to turn that corner and start playing Test cricket like New Zealand have.

More from Joe Root on Sky Sports: "We were looking at ways to get something out of this surface and felt Sam Curran was more likely than Jofra Archer at that time.

"This has been a frustrating Test for Archer. He's a hugely exciting talent and he has a huge amount of skill but he has to learn that there are certain spells where he needs to ramp it up more. He may have to bowl shorter spells. The energy and effort have to be there all the time.

"He's a young guy at the start of his career. He's never bowled with this ball before, these are foreign conditions and it will take time to adjust to that.

"He's taken international cricket by storm but having too high an expectation of him at the start of his career is a dangerous thing."

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson talking to Test Match Special: "It’s superb. It was a fantastic game of cricket over five days, on a pitch that was wearing, that’s want you want.

"It was an outstanding effort after losing the toss to reduce them to 350. That’s a decent first innings score and you have to play extremely well to change that momentum but we did that thanks to BJ [Watling] and Mitchell Santner and some other contributions. Those guys showed a huge amount of heart and they made the right decisions."

The England bowlers threw everything at New Zealand. In the first innings when they had New Zealand four down I thought Joe Root had a really good day.

They got their plans wrong bowling short but they got it right the next day when they changed their plans.

England captain Joe Root, speaking to Sky Sports: "There were a few soft dismissals [Root raises his hand].

"It can be quite difficult - you get yourself in a mood to defend and then you end up playing a half-hearted shot. I gave that ball far too much respect, it should have gone for four or six over point.

On whether England were too passive on day five: "We tried to get partnerships and not go too far away from what comes naturally. We knew that going past their score was a way of extending the match in trying to save it.

"But we tried to get accustomed to conditions and then play our game and we didn't do that enough."

I thought the way Neil Wagner changed his role in the team today, from the enforcer to pitching it up, was impressive and reacting to the Trent Boult injury.

Tim Southee used the crease well and created uncertainty in the batsman's mind while Mitchell Santner was consistent.

There are lessons for England to learn from the New Zealand bowling attack. England did demonstrate some adaptability with the ball though. They got it wrong on day three but got the plans right on the fourth morning.

New Zealand wicketkeeper BJ Watling talking to Test Match Special: "We felt like opportunities were going to come if we kept patient and put the ball in the right area and I thought the boys did that today.

"It started to stay a bit low, that's good for a day five wicket, you want a bit of variation. We managed to get the lead which was the ultimate aim and then get the wickets today.

"We didn't talk about a key wicket, they were all key wickets. If you look at the partnership between Joe Denly and Ben Stokes it started to look a little bit niggly."

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "It feels great to win a Test match and it took a huge amount of work to get past their total. It was a really good wicket and it aged nicely.

"It was huge heart from our middle order to get over 600 and that gave us the only chance of winning.

"We had to apply ourselves as long as possible so we didn't require a big batting effort batting last on this pitch.

"BJ Watling's application at the crease and his focus, his patience to make good decisions for a long time are incredible.

"Apart from the odd delivery that reacted as you'd expect on a day five wicket it was still a good surface and our bowlers were outstanding."

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley might not be everyone's cup of tea aesthetically but they can bat time and I don't think Dom Sibley looked out of place of his debut.

Joe Denly looked good again. 350 in the first innings was a good score but it wasn't a dominating the game score.

England captain Joe Root: "We missed an opportunity when you look at the two first innings in comparison. We needed to get a score over 450 and to use that scoreboard pressure as an extra fielder.

"We did a lot of good stuff, we just need to do it for longer. It's different to the style of cricket we've had to play in our home conditions. There is stuff to address.

"It ended up being a good wicket over the course of five days. It was the right decision at the toss but not kicking on in that first innings has cost us the game.

"We can't panic and think it's the end of the world. We are working hard behind the scenes and if we come back strong, we'll hopefully level it up."

It was an entertaining Test match. England would have fancied their chances coming into today but if you look back and reflect on the five days, if you look at England's first innings, they'd laid a platform after day one but didn't capitalise on day two and that's probably the difference and the deficit of 65 at the end should have been on that score.
