England opener Rory Burns on Sky Sports: "It was quite an enjoyable experience! It felt a little bit different to the Ireland Test. That stand rocking, this place going... it was quite something. I've got my own song as well. I didn't think I was going to have one!"

Last time England batted on three consecutive days? Last week against Ireland.

    Tony

One over in the second innings on day one, one ball at the start of day three - you're right Tony! Far less impressive than this effort though!

Jason Roy got a good ball. As an opening batsman you will get those. Jos Buttler got a similar delivery.

Joe Root dug in. He knew how important it was to bat time. When you lose a bowler England couldn't have been bowling again today. The two happiest players will be Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad.

With it looking unlikely James Anderson will be able to bowl in Australia's second innings, it was even more vital for England's top order to dig in and set a platform for the hosts to get a telling lead.

Joe Root wasn't at his fluent best but found a way, while Rory Burns showed fantastic grit.

Burns left the ball really well today. He made the bowlers bowl to him. Mentally, he showed he is made of strong stuff.

Alastair Cook would have been proud of that innings. There is no greater compliment for an England opening batsman.

That was the best day of Test match batting I have seen from England in a long, long time.

It really is tremendous from Rory Burns to have worked that hard on his technique in just one week and for it to have made so much difference.

  9. 'For Burns to bat all day is fantastic'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Test Match Special

Test match batting is back. It was a slowish wicket, with a little bit of movement but Rory Burns has arrived here Egdbaston. He was all over the shop against Ireland last week. His technique was not with him. He has gone away and worked with his coaches. He has got his hands tighter to his body and had a great gameplan. To bat all day was fantastic.

England really should be looking to establish a sizable first-innings lead tomorrow and I think they will need it.

Tremendous work from Burns and Stokes to steady the ship after the quick wickets for Joe Denly and Jos Buttler. Their partnership is worth 73 and counting.
