On day one, England fans were saying boo to an idiosyncratic centurion.

One day two, they were saying boo-urns.

And with superb support from Ben Stokes, Rory Burns batted through the day to take England to near parity.

The hosts will resume on 267-4 on day three, trailing by 17.

But Rory Burns just kept accumulating, spending an ages in the nervous nineties and 10 balls alone on 99 before bringing up a fine maiden Test century...

Australia then had the old ball changed after it got knocked out of shape and got the rub of the green when the replacement cherry started swinging.

It brought two quick wickets as Joe Denly and Jos Buttler departed as the tourists surged back into the contest.

Along the way, there was also some hat eating...

England captain Joe Root similarly showed superb determination, just batting time at first before finding some fluency, only to chip one back to Peter Siddle...

But England opener Rory Burns held firm. Tested and vulnerable outside off, but finding a way to survive, tucking everything off his pads.

England started the day 10-0 and when Jason Roy nicked off, that familiar sinking feeling returned for the home crowd...

I think there was a bit of impatience from Australia. Sometimes you have to sit back. Australia are used to making things happen and it didn't happen on this surface. It was a tough day but this is Test cricket. It was traditional and attritional.

Cahrlie: 120 lead, bowl them out for 250, finish 130-9. England win, easy. Right?

Rory Burns, asked if he had doubts he could score a Test century: "Potentially. I have just tried to stay positive in every game and see every game as an opportunity to nail down my spot.”

The one opportunity Australia had to Burns they didn't review. England had one of those days when the 50-50 moments went with them. That happens. England have got themselves into a position with a lot more depth in their batting to come. There is a chance they could get a 100 to 150-run lead.

England opener Rory Burns on TMS, asked if that century is something he has always dreamt of: "Definitely. I had two brothers play with me when I was younger and it is something I have dreamt of.

"I was on 99 for a while - to get over the line is awesome. I was calm throughout it. I was waiting for a ball to come into my area."

On Michael Vaughan's comparison, saying Alastair Cook would have been proud of the innings: "I will take that. That is high praise indeed. It was one for the purists - hard work. I enjoy that, getting in the battle and doing what you can is enough for me."

I like it when a players goes away and works, hitting balls and working out his technique. In the next innings to deliver, there is no better feeling as a batsman.

He is clearly a decent player. We have seen why he averages 42 in first-class cricket. He is stubborn and likes to bat long.

Rory Burns, speaking on Sky Sports, on the nervous nineties: "I was waiting for a ball that I knew, dead cert, was going. I was playing with myself, telling myself not to sweep, but I was waiting for something in my arc. That's for Daz Veness [Surrey strength and conditioning coach] - 20-second sprints, there you go!

"I had a look at my balance, from last Test to this, and I was trying to get that rhythm and feeling back. Sometimes it just takes two hour at the crease to get you going.

"I've been trying to embrace opportunities. I wanted to put myself in a better position to take that opportunity. I was struggling with my rhythm as Lord's, I was trying to find a way to get that good feeling back. I don't think you'd coach many kids to bat like I do but sometimes you've got to get into a battle in a scrappy way and come through."
