Women and football in Iran 25 May 2006
Since 1979 women in Iran have been unable to go to a football stadium and cheer on their national team. It’s considered indecent for them to mix with men on the terraces or to see the players running about in shorts and t-shirts. Perhaps surprisingly Iran’s hardline President decided to lift the ban – but he’s now had to back track after the country’s supreme religious leader intervened to say the ban must stay in place.Ìý
