Anaesthesia

In this week's episode of Check Up, Barbara Myers invites listeners to call in and email with their questions about anaesthesia.

Anyone who's ever had any kind of medical operation, from a filling in the teeth to major surgery, has received some kind of anaesthetic.Ìý

Even though anestheticsÌýare used in medicineÌýevery dayÌýthere's a great deal that's still not known about how they actually work.

Some people suffer with side effects after coming round from an anaesthetic.

The common problems are feeling sick, dizzy or shivery, or suffering general aches and pains.Ìý

Other side effects can beÌýblurred vision, drowsiness, a sore throat, a headache and breathing difficulties.

Are you about to undergo a procedure which will require anÌýanaesthetic?ÌýÌý

Are you wondering how you should prepare for an anaesthetic, or concerned aboutÌýits effectsÌýduring and after the procedure?Ìý

Do you haveÌýquestions about any after-effects of anaesthesia thatÌýyou may be experiencing?Ìý

Barbara Myers will be joined by Dr David Wilkinson, Consultant Anaesthetist at St Bartholomew's Hospital,ÌýLondonÌýto answer these and other questions about anaesthetics.
