Are creative talent and depression linked?
Does a musician’s creative ability make them more susceptible to bouts of depression, to substance abuse and to sensation seeking? Jazz musicians, Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus were both prone to periods of depression during their lives. They struggled with drug addiction and battled with their own complex characters and temperments. A of 40 American jazz musicians by Dr Geoffrey Wills, PhD aims to determine what, if any, are the links between creativity and depression. explores the context of these findings and the wider implications of the study.
