Are our memories a true reflection of what has really happened to us.Ìý An increasing amount of research shows how memory is vulnerable to suggestion.Ìý In one case a fake picture of Bugs Bunny in Disneyland prompted people to remember shaking its hand as a child, although the character doesn’t belong in Disneyland.Ìý If memory is so fallible what does it say about recovered memories?
Dr Raj Persaud discusses with , Professor of Clinical Psychology at UCL and , Professor of Psychology at Harvard University whether it’s possible to repress memories of childhood trauma and whether these recovered memories can be trusted?
MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT for BLACK and AFRICAN PEOPLE
Throughout this series of All in the Mind Dr Raj Persaud will be examining why black and African people are up to eighteen times more likely than white people to diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Why are so many are sectioned under the Mental Health Act?
Paul Grey spent ten years in the mental health care system.Ìý He was forcibly admitted to a mental hospital, heavily medicated and often put into isolation.Ìý He now runs a building firm and helps at Footprints UK, a voluntary organisation which gives help and advice to those suffering mental health problems.Ìý This week Paul returns to his psychiatric hospital and talks to the professionals who treated him - reporter Sara Parker - and shares with Dr Raj Persaud his thoughts and feelings about his experience, his treatment and the attitudes he has come across.
Dr Persaud Raj then speaks to Dr Trevor Turner, Consultant Psychiatrist about Paul’s experiences.
