MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT for AFRICANand CARIBBEAN PEOPLE

Last week the Government released disturbing figures confirming that Black people in Britain constitute 30% of the patient group in medium secure psychiatric services and 16% of high secure services. Throughout this series Dr Raj Persaud will be examining why African and Caribbean people are up to eighteen times more likely than white people to be diagnosed with a serious mental illness.

Paul Grey spent ten years in the mental health care systemÌýafter being diagnosed with manic depression. He now runs a business and helps at Footprints UK, a voluntary organisation which gives help and advice to those suffering mental health problems. This week Paul took the difficult step of returning to his secondary school .

Dr Raj Persaud then discussed Paul's experiences with Simon Warren, senior research fellow at the at Birmingham University.

HAPPINESS and POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

Among medical and psychological researchers happiness has always seemed a relatively trivial emotion to devote your career to when more pressing matters like schizophrenia or depression remain unsolved. But could it be that if we knew the secret of happiness then most mental health problems and negative emotions would automatically be solved?

Dr Raj Persaud talks to psychologist, Dr Martin Seligman about his new book called Authentic Happiness which teaches us that happiness can be cultivated by identifying and using many of the strengths and traits that we already possess, our 'signature strengths' – kindness, originality, humour, optimism and generosity.
