Electro Convulsive Therapy - ECT

With the publication of the largest ever study on what patients think about Electro Convulsive Therapy, Dr Raj Persaud discusses why ECT still remains so controversial withÌýDr Diana Rose, co-ordinator of SURE (Service User Research Enterprise) which published the report, and Dr Allan Scott, consultant psychiatrist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.Ìý

Users complain of irreversible memory loss while psychiatrists fight against plans to curb its use.

Psychiatrists in Films

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest might be the most famous film to use ECT, but Dr Persaud takes issue with the way his profession is continuingly represented on the big screen.Ìý

Why does he have to be his patient’s best friend or a psychopath himself?Ìý Why do all female psychiatrists in Hollywood always end up falling in love with their patients?Ìý

But Steven Pflanz, chief mental health services at Frances E Warren Airforce Base in Wyoming believes Hollywood could provide role models for the next generation of psychiatrists.

Psychiatrists and Families

Is having a psychiatrist in the family cause for concern?Ìý At the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting Dr Raj Persaud went along to a conference on Living With A Psychiatrist to find out what affect he was having on his own children.

All in the Mind would like to hear from anyone who has experiences good or bad about this.
