Khtek
DJ Edu meets Khtek, the biggest female star in Morocco's rap scene, to chat about her willingness to confront taboos and the source of her on-stage confidence.
Khtek is widely regarded as the biggest female rapper of her generation in Morocco. Her willingness to confront taboos and bare her soul have got her noticed and won her many fans. Even her name is a provocation: in Darija (Moroccan Arabic), it means "your sister" and is used as an insult by men.
Khtek shot to fame three years ago when she collaborated on tracks with some of Morocco’s highest profile male rappers. She featured on Hors-Série alongside ElGrandeToto, Don Bigg and Draganov, and on Fratello with Tagne and Stormy. Now her own releases are hotly anticipated. Her 2022 song Zero Limite encourages women to push the boundaries regardless of any social or physical constraints. Its video features well-known Moroccan women including wheelchair tennis champion Najwa Awane.
In this episode, Khtek invites DJ Edu to her favourite cafΓ© in Casablanca, and they discuss everything from where she gets her confidence to perform on stage, to her diagnosis with bipolar disorder and why fewer Moroccan rappers are talking about politics.
