Ami Yerewolo and Dr Keb
Rapper Ami Yerewolo and singer-songwriter Dr Keb talk to DJ Edu about their efforts to shake up Mali's music scene.
Mali has an incredibly rich musical tradition, but as our guests on TIA this week reveal, it can be hard to shake things up and do something different there.
Ami Yerewolo is Mali’s first female rapper, and, as she tells DJ Edu, it has taken her ten years of struggle and sacrifice to get where she is today, with a supportive label, an impressive third album and at the helm of a festival celebrating women rap artists.
Dr Keb is a singer-songwriter influenced by Afrobeats. He’s also faced closed doors, being turfed out of studios and not allowed onto stages to perform. But Dr Keb has persevered. He’s just released his first album, Reality. It contains twenty-three tracks and shows off his versatility and talent. It’s also doing really well with fans.
