Hugh and Jemima

Hugh, the eldest Cazalet brother, and his wife

Hugh (Dominic Mafham)

Hugh is the eldest Cazalet brother . Wounded in WW1, he lost a hand and is still victim to headaches from the shrapnel in his head. Conscientious about running the family timber firm, he has none of his brother Edward’s flair for business. Hugh is a very loyal person and has not forgiven Edward for leaving his first wife, Villy, and marrying his mistress, Diana. The two brothers quarrel constantly over how the firm should be run and Hugh can be slow to see that change may be beneficial.

Jemima (Alison Pettit)

Jemima lost her husband in WW2 and was left to bring up twin boys on her own. She took a job at Cazalets and found herself working as Hugh’s secretary and they fell in love. Hugh adores Jemima and their little girl, Laura. After the death of his beloved wife, Sybil, Hugh had spent a long time on his own thinking he would never find happiness again. Jemima is a good influence on Hugh often persuading him to take a less stubborn approach to relationships and getting on well with Polly, Hugh’s grown-up daughter. Jemima is a peace-maker and Hugh realises how lucky he is to have found her.
