Clary and Archie
Clary, Rupert’s daughter, and her husband Archie.
Clary (Georgia Groome)
Clary, Rupert’s daughter, has married his old friend, Archie, who was like a father figure to her when Rupert was missing during the war. They both couldn’t believe it when they realised they loved each other. Their marriage at first was carefree and Clary was able to be a proper writer, something she had always dreamed of. But they now have two children, Bertie and Harriet, and life seems an endless round of domestic drudgery for Clary. A shortage of money and time and Clary’s continuing low self-esteem means their marriage is tested severely.
Archie (Greg Wise)
Archie is much older than Clary and he struggles to make a living as an artist, though getting a job at Camberwell Art School helps. Living in a small flat with a wife and two children seems a lifetime away from his time painting in France before the war. Archie has always seemed like a rock to Clary, endlessly patient, diplomatic and constant, but he is about to surprise even himself.
