Litir 99: Buaghallan buidhe

Chan eil fhios a鈥檓 cia mheud agaibh a tha e貌lach air an lus ris an can sinn, ann an G脿idhlig, 鈥渂uaghallan鈥 neo 鈥渂uaghallan buidhe鈥. Tha e cumanta gu le貌r ri taobh rathaidean neo ann am p脿ircean. As t-samhradh, bidh d矛theanan buidhe air, a tha car coltach ri d矛theanan an ne貌inein. Gu dearbh, tha e ann an teaghlach nan ne貌inean. Tha luchd-saidheans e貌lach air an lus mar Senecio jacobaea, agus 鈥檚 e an t-ainm oifigeil a th鈥 air ann am Beurla, ragwort.

Anns na h-eileanan a-muigh, bhiodh a鈥 chlann a鈥 cleachdadh a鈥 bhuaghallain ann an g猫am s貌nraichte. Bha sin anns na l脿ithean mus robh telebhiseanan neo geamannan-coimpiutair aca! 鈥橲 e an t-ainm a bh鈥 air a鈥 gh猫am 鈥淕oid a鈥 Chr霉in鈥 agus seo mar a bha e air a chluich.

Bhiodh a鈥 chlann a鈥 tighinn cruinn air 脿ite c貌mhnard agus bhiodh iad gan sgaradh fh猫in ann an d脿 leth. Bhiodh an darna cuid dhiubh ann an aon sreath, agus a鈥 chuid eile mun coinneamh ann an sreath eile, agus bhiodh balaich agus nigheanan c貌mhla anns gach sreath. Bhiodh iad a鈥 sp矛onadh lus-buaghallain agus ga thilgeil air an talamh eadar an d脿 sgioba. B鈥 e sin an 鈥渃r霉n鈥.

Bhiodh cuideigin an uairsin a鈥 leum air a鈥 chr霉n, ga thogail is a鈥 ruith leis. Bhiodh e a鈥 feuchainn ri ruith timcheall na sgioba eile gu l猫ir, is tilleadh don fheadhainn aige fh猫in. Nan d猫anadh e sin, rachadh leis, agus bhiodh an geam a鈥 t貌iseachadh a-rithist leis a鈥 chr霉n anns a鈥 mheadhan.

Ach nan robh am fear leis a鈥 chr霉n air a ghlacadh leis an sgioba eile, bhiodh aige ri falbh bhon 鈥渃hampa鈥 agus chuireadh an fheadhainn eile an t-ainm 鈥渃noimheag鈥 neo 鈥渃nuimheag鈥 air. Agus, mar a bu lugha de chnoimheagan air an sgioba agad aig an deireadh, 鈥檚 ann a b鈥 fhe脿rr. Agus b鈥 e sin an g猫am.

Anns na seann leabhraichean, tha buaghallan air a litreachadh 鈥渂-u-a-d-h-g-h-a-l-l-a-n鈥 agus thathar a鈥 d猫anamh dheth gu bheil e a鈥 tighinn bhon d脿 fhacal 鈥渂uadh鈥 agus 鈥済allan鈥, a鈥 ciallachadh ann am Beurla, 鈥渢he virtuous stalk鈥 neo 鈥檚 d貌cha 鈥渢he victorious stalk鈥. Chan eil fhios a鈥檓 carson a bhiodh an darna fear iomchaidh, leis gu bheil a leithid de lus a鈥 toirt droch bhuaidh air beathaichean a dh鈥檌theas e. Agus, a thaobh an fhir eile, 鈥檚 d貌cha gu bheil e a鈥 buntainn air a鈥 chomas, a th鈥 aig an lus seo, f脿s pailt ann am p脿irc nach eil air a cumail ann an deagh 貌rdugh.

Co-dhi霉 neo co-dheth, sin am buaghallan, agus tha fhios gu robh am b脿rd, Donnchadh B脿n Mac an t-Saoir e貌lach air, mar a bha e e貌lach air na lusan cumanta air fad a bha a鈥 f脿s anns an sg矛re aige. Bha mi a鈥 leughadh beagan de bh脿rdachd Dhonnchaidh an latha eile, agus th脿inig mi tarsainn d脿 rann a ch貌rd rium gu m貌r.

Tha iad 脿s 貌ran air a bheil 鈥淥ran do chaora a fhuaradh a鈥 ghibht o Mhnaoi Uasail 脿raidh鈥. Tha an t-貌ran mu dheidhinn caora cheann-fhionn, mar a bh鈥 aige fh猫in oirre, air an robh Donnchadh gu math measail, agus a chaill e. Ach, aig an deireadh, as d猫idh dha a鈥 chaora a mholadh, agus as d猫idh dha leigeil fhaicinn mar a bha e ga h-ionndrainn, tha e a鈥 cur a fheallsanachd an c猫ill. Tha mi a鈥 smaoineachadh gu bheil e a鈥 seasamh airson m貌ran rudan nar beatha 鈥 ri linn Dhonnchaidh 鈥 agus an latha an-diugh. F脿gaidh mi agaibhse e:

Beannachd leis an rud a dh鈥檉halbhas;

Chan e 鈥檚 fhe脿rr dhuinn ach na dh鈥檉hanas.

鈥橲 fhe脿rr bhith cr矛dheil leis na dh鈥檉huiricheas

Na bhith t霉rsach mu na chailleas.

Faclan na seachdaine

Faclan na seachdaine: buaghallan (buidhe): ragwort; Goid a鈥 Chr霉in: the theft of the crown; a鈥 sp矛onadh: pulling out a plant by the root; cnoimheag, cnuimheag: maggot; rann: verse; caora cheann-fhionn: white headed sheep.

Abairtean na seachdaine

Abairtean na seachdaine: a tha car coltach ri d矛theanan an ne貌inein: that are somewhat like the flowers of the daisy; bhiodh a鈥 chlann a鈥 tighinn cruinn air 脿ite c貌mhnard: the children would come together in a flat place; agus a鈥 chuid eile mun coinneamh ann an sreath eile: and the others opposite them in another line; nan d猫anadh e sin, rachadh leis: if he did that, he would be successful; nan robh X air a ghlacadh: if X were caught; bhiodh aige ri falbh: he would have to leave; mar a bu lugha de chnoimheagan air an sgioba agad aig an deireadh, 鈥檚 ann a b鈥 fhe脿rr: the fewer maggots on your team at the end, the better; chan eil fhios a鈥檓 carson a bhiodh an darna fear iomchaidh: I don鈥檛 know why the first one would be suitable; ann am p脿irc nach eil air a cumail ann an deagh 貌rdugh: in a field which is not well looked after; co-dhi霉 neo co-dheth: whatever (the truth of the matter); mar a bha e ga h-ionndrainn: as he was missing her; tha e a鈥 cur a fheallsanachd an c猫ill: he demonstrates his philosophy; ri linn Dhonnchaidh: in Duncan鈥檚 time; beannachd leis an rud a dh鈥檉halbhas: a blessing on the thing that leaves; chan e 鈥檚 fhe脿rr dhuinn, ach na dh鈥檉hanas: it is not that which is best, but the thing that stays; 鈥檚 fhe脿rr bhith cr矛dheil leis na dh鈥檉huiricheas: it is best to be joyous about what remains; na bhith t霉rsach mu na chailleas: than to be sad about that which is lost.

Puing ghr脿mair na seachdaine

Puing ghr脿mair na seachdaine: Oran do chaora a fhuaradh a鈥 ghibht o Mhnaoi Uasail 脿raidh: song to a ewe which was received as a gift from a certain Lady. Many Gaelic learners will no longer be familiar with 鈥渕naoi鈥, the dative singular case of the feminine noun 鈥渂ean鈥 (wife, woman) as it has largely become redundant and is only commonly met with in old poetry or song. Nowadays, the nominative form is generally used in the dative case and Donnchadh B脿n, had he been writing today, might have put 鈥溾 Bhean Uasail 脿raidh.鈥 Note, however, that the genitive case, 鈥渕n脿鈥 still has currency. Note also that some other feminine nouns have a distinct, slenderised singular dative form which is still adhered to. Examples are clann (children) which is cloinn in the dative (eg thoir seo don chloinn, give this to the children), and clach (stone) which is cloich in the dative (eg cur seo fo chloich, put this under a stone). How would you say in Gaelic, 鈥渢his stone fell on the children鈥, 鈥減ut the cup on the stone鈥 and 鈥淚 am looking for my wife鈥?

Gn脿ths-cainnt na seachdaine

Gn脿ths-cainnt na seachdaine: F脿gaidh mi agaibhse e: I鈥檒l leave it with you.
