Litir 218: Abairt 脿 beul-aithris Siorrachd Rois

Tha beagan fiosrachaidh agam an seo a dh鈥檉haodadh duine agaibh a dh猫anamh beartach. Leis an fh矛rinn innse, chan eil mi cinnteach co-dhi霉 bu ch貌ir dhomh a thoirt seachad oir dh鈥檉haodainn a bhith beartach mi-fh矛n! 鈥橲 e a th鈥 ann abairt 脿 beul-aithris Siorrachd Rois, is tha e a鈥 dol mar seo: Fichead slat bho Leac a鈥 Bhealaich, tha seiche searraich l脿n 貌ir. Canaidh mi sin a-rithist: Fichead slat bho Leac a鈥 Bhealaich, tha seiche searraich l脿n 貌ir.

Uill, 鈥檚 d貌cha nach eil an t-seiche ann tuilleadh, oir bidh a leithid a鈥 lobhadh tro th矛de. Ach ma tha e f矛or, bu ch貌ir don 貌r a bhith ann fhathast.

Nise, mus ruith sibh airson ur mapaichean, chan eil mi a鈥 dol a dh鈥檌nnse dhuibh gu mionaideach c脿鈥 bheil Leac a鈥 Bhealaich. Oir chan eil fios agam air a sin gu mionaideach. Ach innsidh mi seo dhuibh: tha i faisg air Loch a鈥 Bhraoin ann am Fr矛th a鈥 Bhr脿igh Mh貌ir gu deas air Ulapul. Loch a鈥 Bhraoin 鈥 loch of the drizzle. Chunnaic mise air l脿 teth grianach e. Ach, ma tha sibh e貌lach air an sg矛re ann an droch aimsir, tuigidh sibh, 鈥檚 d貌cha, mar a fhuair e ainm.

鈥橲 e fear de na lochan faisg air l脿imh, a tha ri taobh an rathaid mh貌ir eadar Ulapul agus Inbhir Nis, Loch Droma. Gu tuath air an loch air taobh thall an rathaid bhuaithe tha Meall Leacachain. Agus aig bonn a鈥 mhill, tha Leathad Leacachain. Faisg air a seo o chionn fhada thachair rudeigin gl猫 annasach, ma ghabhas st貌iridh 脿 beul-aithris na sg矛re creidsinn. Chaidh an st貌iridh seo a chruinneachadh bho fhear, Ruairidh MacMhathain, a bha uaireigin a鈥 fuireach l脿imh ri Loch a鈥 Bhraoin.

Air oidhche fhuar aig Leathad Leacachain, thachair duine air boireannach a bha a鈥 breith leanabh, agus i air an rathad eadar d脿 bhaile. Bha i ann an cunnart b脿sachadh leis an fhuachd. D猫, ma-th脿, a bha an duine a鈥 dol a dh猫anamh airson am boireannach is a leanabh a sh脿bhaladh? Uill, rinn e rud annasach, a r猫ir na sge貌il. Cha robh anns an n脿baidheachd ach aon rud far an robh fasgadh is bl脿ths 鈥 each. Chan urrainn dhomh r脿dh co-dhi霉 鈥檚 ann leis an duine fh猫in a bha an t-each gus nach ann.

Ach mharbh e an t-each, agus thug e a鈥 ghreallach 脿s. A bheil sibh e貌lach air an fhacal sin 鈥 greallach? Tha e air a dhol a-steach don Bheurla, an d脿 chuid mar ainmear agus gn矛omhair. Canaidh daoine 鈥淚 gralloched a deer鈥, a鈥 ciallachadh gun tug e am mionach, no a鈥 ghreallach, 脿s an fhiadh.

Co-dhi霉, bha closach an eich bl脿th, agus chuir an duine am boireannach agus a leanabh na broinn airson an cumail s脿bhailte. Agus mhair iad be貌 air s脿illeamh na rinn e dhaibh.

Chaidh na bliadhnaichean seachad, agus bha an Rosach a bha seo ann an D霉n Eideann. Bha e a鈥 dol seachad air taighean nuair a chuala e boireannach aig uinneag gu h-脿rd, agus i a鈥 bruidhinn ri t鈥 eile. 鈥淭ha i fuar,鈥 thuirt an d脿rna t猫. 鈥淭ha,鈥 fhreagair an t鈥 eile, 鈥渁ch chan eil i cho fuar ri Leathad Leacachain.鈥

Dh鈥檃ithnich an duine an t-ainm agus ghlaodhaich e suas, a鈥 faighneachd dhen bhoireannach gu d猫 am fios a bh鈥 aice air Leathad Leacachain. 鈥淯ill,鈥 ars鈥 ise, 鈥渞ugadh mi ann.鈥 Bha fios aig an duine gu robh e a鈥 bruidhinn ris an leanabh a shabhail e air an oidhche fhuair a bha sin, agus i a-nise na boireannach. Bha iad gu math toilichte e貌las a chur air a ch猫ile mu dheireadh thall.

Faclan na seachdaine

Faclan na seachdaine: dh鈥檉haodainn: I could be; fichead slat: 20 yards; gu mionaideach: precisely, in detail; Fr矛th a鈥 Bhr脿igh Mh貌ir: the Braemore Forest (a 鈥渄eer forest鈥 is fr矛th 鈥 it does not have trees); annasach: unusual; closach: carcass; mionach: intestines, guts; na broinn: inside it (fem); Rosach: Ross-shire man; mu dheireadh thall: at long last.

Abairtean na seachdaine

Abairtean na seachdaine: a dh鈥檉haodadh duine agaibh a dh猫anamh beartach: which could make one of you rich; co-dhi霉 bu ch貌ir dhomh a thoirt seachad: whether I should give it out (the information); seiche searraich l脿n 貌ir: a foal鈥檚 skin full of gold; bidh X a鈥 lobhadh tro th矛de: X will rot eventually; air taobh thall an rathaid bhuaithe: on the other side of the road from it; aig bonn a鈥 mhill: at the base of the meall (hill); ma ghabhas st貌iridh 脿 beul-aithris na sg矛re creidsinn: if a story from the area鈥檚 oral tradition can be believed; chaidh an st貌iridh a chruinneachadh: the story was collected; bha i ann an cunnart b脿sachadh: she was in danger of dying; a r猫ir na sge貌il: according to the story; far an robh fasgadh is bl脿ths: where there was shelter and warmth; thug e a鈥 ghreallach 脿s: he gralloched it (took the intestines out); air s脿illeamh na rinn e dhaibh: because of what he did for them; dh鈥檃ithnich an duine an t-ainm: the man recognised the name;rugadh mi ann: I was born there; agus i a-nise na boireannach: who was now a woman; e貌las a chur air a ch猫ile: to get to know each other.

Puing-ghr脿mair na seachdaine

Puing-ghr脿mair na seachdaine: co-dhi霉 鈥檚 ann leis an duine fh猫in a bha an t-each gus nach ann: whether or not the horse belonged to the man himself. The construction of co-dhi霉 鈥 gus nach is a very useful one and I want to make two observations about it. Firstly, it is the affirmative form of the verb which is used first, not the interrogative eg co-dhi霉 bha e deiseil gus nach robh (whether he was ready or not). We use bha here and we don鈥檛 say co-dhi霉 an robh e deiseil鈥 Secondly, the verbal form coming after gus nach reflects the first verbal form. If it is co-dhi霉 bha鈥 then we will say gus nach robh. If it is co-dhi霉 鈥檚 ann鈥, we will say gus nach ann; if it is co-dhi霉 bhiodh e 鈥 we will say gus nach bitheadh (using the emphatic form of biodh) etc. Here are some other examples so you can see how the second verb follows the first: co-dhi霉 bidh e ann gus nach bi (whether he will there or not); co-dhi霉 n矛 i an obair gus nach d猫an (whether she does the work or not); co-dhi霉 鈥檚 e 脿m freagarrach a bh鈥 ann gus nach e (whether or not it was a suitable time).

Gn脿ths-cainnt na seachdaine

Gn脿ths-cainnt na seachdaine: thachair duine air boireannach a bha a鈥 breith leanabh: a man happened upon a woman who was giving birth to a child. Thachair X air Y: X happened upon, met by chance with, Y.
