Litir 246: Bha mi a鈥 googladh

Tha e iongantach na th猫id a-mach air an eadar-l矛on mu dheidhinn gach duine againn cha mh貌r. Cuiribh ur n-ainm a-staigh gu inneal-rannsachaidh uaireigin agus cuiridh e iongnadh oirbh na th鈥 anns an t-siostam mu ur deidhinn. Sin mura h-eil ainm cumanta agaibh no an aon ainm ri fear no t猫 ainmeil.

Chuala mi facal 霉r Beurla an l脿 eile airson a leithid de rannsachadh a dh猫anamh air a鈥 choimpiutar 鈥 鈥済oogling鈥. Cuiridh mi geall nach fhada gus an cluinnear cuideigin ag r脿dh 鈥渂ha mi a鈥 googladh鈥 ann an G脿idhlig! O chionn beagan is tr矛 bliadhna, sgr矛obh mi t猫 de na litrichean seo do luchd-ionnsachaidh air gnothaichean co-cheangailte ris an fhacal partan no, mar a theirear ann an cuid de dh鈥櫭爄teachan, portan. Bidh fios agaibh, no 鈥檚 d貌cha gum bi cuimhne agaibh gu bheil am facal a鈥 ciallachadh shore crab ann am Beurla.

Agus sgr矛obh mi gu robh partan air a dhol a-steach don Bheurla, a r猫ir choltais, mar an fhacal partin a th鈥 air a chleachdadh le muinntir na h-Albais anns an ear-thuath. Bha mo sheanair air taobh mo mh脿thar 脿 Eilginn, is cha robh G脿idhlig aige ach, mas math mo chuimhne, 鈥檚 e 鈥減artin鈥 a chanadh esan airson nan cr霉bagan beaga a chithear air a鈥 chladach. Uill, an-uiridh, fhuair mi brath tron phost-dealain bho fhear a tha a鈥 d猫iligeadh ris an fhacal partin ann am faclair 霉r Beurla ann an Sasainn. Feumaidh gu robh e a鈥 鈥済oogladh鈥 air a鈥 choimpiutar aige, feuch am facal partin a lorg, agus gun do nochd an Litir Gh脿idhlig agam am measg a h-uile c脿il eile.

Co-dhi霉, dh鈥檌arr e orm an litir eadar-theangachadh is rinn mi sin dha. 鈥淎 bheil thu cinnteach?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich e dhiom, 鈥済ur iad na cr霉bagan beaga cladaich a bha do sheanair a鈥 ciallachadh, oir tha e coltach nach e sin a鈥 chiall a th鈥 air an fhacal anns a鈥 Bheurla Ghallda an-diugh. Tha e a-nise a鈥 ciallachadh cr霉bag ruadh, an se貌rsa a tha math airson ithe. 鈥橲 d貌cha gu robh do sheanair a鈥 cleachdadh an fhacail anns an t-seann d貌igh, agus gu robh sin na b鈥 fh脿isge air a chiall ann an G脿idhlig.鈥 鈥橲 d貌cha gu robh ach, leis gun do chaochail mo sheanair anns na seachdadan, chan urrainn dhomh a bhith cinnteach mu dheidhinn.

Co-dhi霉, tha am facal air ais nam inntinn a-rithist leis gu robh mi ann an Eirinn o chionn ghoirid. Cha robh mi faisg air a鈥 chladach, ach th脿inig mi tarsainn air seanfhacal ann an G脿idhlig na h-Eireann anns a bheil 鈥減artan鈥 no 鈥減ortan鈥 a鈥 nochdadh. Cuiridh mi ann an G脿idhlig na h-Alba e: 鈥淐oisich gu d矛reach, a mhic 鈥 mar a thuirt an seann phartan ris a鈥 phartan 貌g.鈥

鈥橲 e comhairle chlaon a th鈥 ann, nach e? 鈥淐oisich gu d矛reach, a mhic 鈥 mar a thuirt an seann phartan ris a鈥 phartan 貌g.鈥 Bidh fios agaibh nach ann gu d矛reach a bhios partanan a鈥 coiseachd, ach air leth-oir is gu tric air fiaradh. Tha an seann phartan ag innse don fhear 貌g gum bu ch貌ir dha a bhith a鈥 leantainn a chomhairle, seach eisimpleir fh猫in.

鈥橲 e sin as coireach gu bheil mi a鈥 dol a chumail na Litreach seo am falach am broinn na dachaigh gus nach fhaic an gille agam i, oir cho luath 鈥檚 a bhithinn a鈥 toirt comhairle dha, agus mi fh矛n ris an dearbh ghnothach, chanadh e rium, 鈥渟eadh 鈥 coisich gu d矛reach a mhic 鈥 mar a thuirt an seann phartan ris a鈥 phartan 貌g鈥! Ach tha duilgheadas agam. Chan eil fhios agam nach fhaigh e greim air an Litir co-dhi霉, le bhith a鈥 鈥済oogladh鈥 feasgar br猫agha air choreigin air an eadar-l矛on.

Faclan na seachdaine

Faclan na seachdaine: cr霉bag ruadh: edible crab; trithead: thirty; inntinn: mind.

Abairtean na seachdaine

Abairtean na seachdaine: tha e iongantach na th猫id a-mach air an eadar-l矛on: it is amazing what goes out on the internet; cuiribh ur n-ainm a-staigh gu inneal-rannsachaidh uaireigin: put your name into a search engine sometime; cuiridh mi geall nach fhada gus an cluinnear cuideigin: I bet that it won鈥檛 be long until somebody is heard; a th鈥 air a chleachdadh le muinntir na h-Albais anns an ear-thuath: which is used by Scots speakers in the north-east; airson nan crubagan beaga a chithear: for the little crabs which are seen; nach e sin a鈥 chiall a th鈥 air an fhacal anns a鈥 Bheurla Ghallda: that that is not the meaning of the word in Scots (Beurla Ghallda is an alternative to Albais); 鈥檚 e comhairle chlaon a th鈥 ann: it鈥檚 perverse advice; nach ann gu d矛reach a tha X a鈥 coiseachd: that X doesn鈥檛 walk in a straight line [ahead]; air leth-oir is gu tric air fiaradh: sideways and often slantwise; a bhith a鈥 leantainn a chomhairle, seach eisimpleir fh猫in: following his advice, and not his example; 鈥檚 e sin as coireach gu bheil mi a鈥 dol a chumail X am falach: that is the reason I am going to keep X hidden; am broinn na dachaigh: inside the home; cho luath 鈥檚 a bhithinn a鈥 toirt comhairle dha: as soon as I would be giving him advice; agus mi fh矛n ris an dearbh ghnothach: and myself involved in the same matter (ie guilty of the same infringement); chan eil fios agam nach fhaigh e greim air an Litir co-dhi霉: I don鈥檛 know that he won鈥檛 get hold of the Litir anyway; feasgar br猫agha air choreigin: sometime, lit. some beautiful evening.

Puing-ghr脿mair na seachdaine

Puing-ghr脿mair na seachdaine: gu robh sin na b鈥 fh脿isge air a chiall ann an G脿idhlig: that that was closer to its meaning in Gaelic. I would like to make two comments here. Firstly ciall is in the dative singular case, following the simple preposition air. It is a chiall not a ciall because the noun previously referred to, facal, is masculine; we are saying 鈥渉is meaning鈥 and the masculine possessive article lenites the following consonant. Secondly, the word ciall is itself feminine and you will remember that feminine nouns traditionally slenderise in the singular dative where the article is present. So I might have said air a ch猫ill, and some would say that. The operative word here is 鈥渢raditional鈥; I would say that the majority do not slenderise this word in the dative singular nowadays, although they still would with some similar words (eg a鈥 ghrian, but air a鈥 ghr猫in).

Seanfhacal na seachdaine

Seanfhacal na seachdaine: Coisich gu d矛reach, a mhic 鈥 mar a thuirt an seann phartan ris a鈥 phartan 貌g: walk straight, son 鈥 as the old crab said to the young one. In other words, 鈥渄o as I say, not as I do.鈥
