History of Scots workshop
Children attending Scots Scuil discuss Scots words with Matthew Fitt and James Robertson. They explain their favourite words like ‘maukit’, ‘gadgie’, ‘fitba’ and ‘cuddie’. Matthew Fitt explains how the Scots language came to Scotland and became the language of the kings. James Robertson explains how James VI becoming King of England made English the more important language in Scotland. The children perform a short play in Scots about James VI. They discuss how children are sometimes given prizes for talking Scots and sometimes told off. They plan to put on a play about different attitudes to Scots.
