The Northumbrian pipes

Folk musician, Kathryn Tickell, explains how the oral tradition is important in learning music, as you not only learn the notes but the feeling and the passion in the music. Northumbrian pipes use drones to provide an accompaniment and a chanter plays the melody. The drone pipes are tuned to the tonic and the fifth, allowing the musician to play major and minor tunes over the drone. Tickell considers the sound of the pipes to evoke the bleak, haunting landscape of Northumberland.
