Orkney sustainable fisheries
The waters around the Orkney Islands are a rich source of seafood. The shellfish caught here are valued as high quality produce and are exported all over the world.
Fishing has been an important part of everyday life on the islands for thousands of years, and to ensure it continues for years to come, the council and local cooperatives have established a number of initiatives to sustain the island’s fish stocks and protect the livelihood of the local community.
The island is home to the largest lobster hatchery in Europe.
