Kent and Dover Councils severely criticised after homeless teenager was forced to sleep rough

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

Kent and Dover Councils have both been severely criticised after a homeless teenager was forced to sleep in a tent for nine months.

A local government watchdog says the two authorities made "inexcusable failures" and they did not assess the youngster as a 'child in need', denying him rights to advice and assistance.

The 16- year-old - who cannot be named for legal reasons - was even forced to sell some of his belongings to survive (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

New figures show that a greater number of new mothers in east Kent are choosing to stop breastfeeding their babies after a couple of months compared to other parts of the country.

Only 36% of mums still carry on feeding their infants themselves at 6 to 8 weeks, with the rest opting to use bottles.

In Medway the figure is slightly higher and west Kent fares much better. However, all of Kent is below the national average of 49% (06:22, 07:22 and 08:22).

Also,150 people in Kent have had their cancer treatment stopped due to a shortage of drugs.

The patients received a letter from the Kent and Canterbury Hospital telling them their bladder cancer treatment's been suspended for the foreseeable future.

The hospital told us that the production of the BCG drug treatment has been halted by a flood at the plant which makes it in Canada.

The NHS is now trying to find an alternative supplier of the drug, but is warning consultants there will be massive delays and they may opt for surgery instead (06:39, 07:39 and 08:39).
