One in five pupils chasing grammar school place come from outside county

A leading pressure group for grammar schools says local children are being disadvantaged, after official Kent statistics showed one in five pupils, who were chasing a grammar school place, came from outside the county.

The figures are based on those children who sat the eleven plus last year in Kent and Medway and will fuel the debate over the competition for places (06:07, 07:07 and 08:08).

More foreign tourists are visiting Canterbury, staying for longer and spending more money in the city than ever before.

Figures seen by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent show in 2010 visitors spent an average of 5 nights, spending Β£54m. Last year that rose dramatically to a spend of Β£80m with an average stay of nine nights (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).

The boss of a leading firm of plumbers from Bromley is telling his engineers to drive in the Olympic lanes if they have to.

The controversial new "Games Lanes" which, opened last Wednesday, are mainly for the use of VIPs and athletes and those straying into it face a fine of hundred and thirty pounds.

Charlie Mullins, founder of Pimlico Plumbers, is telling his engineers not to strictly adhere to the ban (07:48).
