The waiting is over the London Olympics opens tonight

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

After seven years of planning, building and hoping - the waiting is finally over.

We are now just hours away from the official opening ceremony of London 2012.

Here in Kent the excitement is already beginning to build - with many of us getting ready to watch tonight's three hour spectacular from the Olympic park (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

A scheme banning traffic passing through a medieval gateway in Canterbury wil continue, despite a four thousand signature petition calling for it to be scrapped.

The controversial project, which diverts vehicles around back roads, is aimed at protecting the towers, cutting congestion and improving air quality in the Saint Dunstans area.

Canterbury Council voted last night to continue with the 12 month experiment. Some traders, like Dave Roberts from St Dunstans Pet Supplies, are disappointed (06:25, 07;22 and 08:22).

A group of lucky Kent schoolchildren are preparing to take part in the Olympics opening ceremony tonight.

Eight pupils from Hayesbrook School in Tonbridge will be amongst the 2,000 UK pupils who will form a Guard of Honour for the competitors, as they walk into the stadium.

The school, which specialises in sport, says it was chosen for embracing the spirit of the Olympics in its lessons (06:52 and 08:53).
