Picket lines are expected to gather at Dover and Folkestone this morning, potentially affecting those using ferries and the Eurotunnel shuttles.

However, the government, desperate not to see a repeat of scenes of long airport queues, has pledged to use trained backroom staff and MoD police to stand in for the strikers.

Kent's primary schools must do better. That is the verdict of an official county council report which reveals one-in-five Kent primaries are performing below the minimum standard of attainment in English and maths. Now the council is pledging to raise standards in primary schools over the next three years.

A memorial service is due to take place in central London today for the popular TV game show host Bob Holness who grew up in Ashford. The veteran broadcaster, whose career spanned almost 60 years, died in January at the age of 83.

Now a campaign is under way to have a street in his home town of Ashford named after Bob Holness, an honour his daughter Ros says her father would be proud of.
