New social care plan for elderly and disabled in Kent

Elderly and disabled people in Kent will have to stay in their own homes for longer in future, as the county council looks to save millions of pounds from its Adult Social Care budget.

Elderly and disabled people in Kent will have to stay in their own homes for longer in future, as the county council looks to save millions of pounds from its Adult Social Care budget.

Managers at County Hall say they intend to rely more on families and volunteers to provide care in the home in future. However, some of those working in the sector are questioning whether that can be achieved.

Some inmates at an open prison in Kent are giving up work because of the amount deducted from their wages to help support victims of crime.

That is according to the chief inspector of prisons, who has delivered a critical report today on Standford Hill prison on the Isle of Sheppey.

The unannounced inspection in December also found inmates rated the food among the worst of any prison, with uncooked meat being served while still frozen.

The search begins today for a new manager for Gillingham Football Club following the departure of Andy Hesenthaler.

Yesterday afternoon the club announced his contract was terminated with immediate effect. The Gills narrowly failed to make the League Two promotion play offs this season.
