Kent councils using private companies to tackle council tax fraud

As Council Tax bills begin landing on our doorsteps, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent has discovered some councils are using specialist private companies to track down people who are falsely claiming discounts.

As this year's Council Tax bills begin landing on our doorsteps, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent has discovered some councils are using specialist private companies to track down people who are falsely claiming discounts.

Residents are entitled to 25% off their annual bill, if they are the only adult living in a property. The Audit Commission says fraudulent claims are costing councils Β£90m a year and some authorities need to do more to investigate the problem. But critics fear some innocent people could be targeted by the crackdown.

Campaigners against live animal exports say hundreds of young calves - many just two weeks old - are being transported through Ramsgate as far as Spain. Compassion in World Farming says it has obtained government figures which show nearly 700 calves were taken through the Kent port in December and January.

More than 5,000 fewer new homes will be built in parts of Kent than were planned just a few years ago. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Sunday Politics South East programme discovered some councils are tearing up housing targets set by the previous government after they were given the freedom to make their own planning decisions. But critics say the approach could lead to a lack of affordable homes.
