Fears for Kent countryside as new planning laws come into force

Changes to the planning system which are expected to make it easier to gain consent for large-scale building projects are coming into force today.

The planning minister and Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark says as long as new building is "sustainable" it will be allowed. But environmentalists fear large parts of the Kent countryside could be concreted over (06:07, 07:07 and 08:08).

A Kent woman with terminal cancer fears she may die before her complaint against the doctor who treated her is ever heard.

Debbie Westwick, from Canterbury, believes Dr Howard Smedley gave her the wrong treatment.

Despite lodging a complaint with the General Medical Council in 2009 it still has not been heard.

Dr Smedley rejects the allegations (06:22, 07:22 and 08:22).

Just over three thousand single parents in Kent have received letters telling them they are being moved from income support to job seekers allowance.

It affects parents of children aged between five and seven, and means they will be offered more support, but be expected to do more to find work during school hours.

The Government says it is making the change, which comes into effect from this May, because it believes work is the best way to help families out of poverty (06:41, 07:39 and 08:39).
