Kent and Essex councils call for Dartford tolls to be lifted during Olympics

Matt Davison sits in alongside John with the latest news, travel, and weather for Kent.

Are you worried about how you are going to get to work during the Olympics? 11 million spectators will be heading for the games in July and August - today politicians in Kent and Essex are warning that will put unprecedented strain on our roads, with the Dartford Crossing a particular blackspot. They want the tolls lifted at the crossing during the games.

John Warnett has been speaking to the leaders of Dartford and Thurrock Councils, Jeremy Kite and John Kent. He started by asking Jeremy Kite why he thought suspending the tolls during the Olympics would help (06:07, 07:07 and 08:08).

This morning you get the chance to hear from and put your questions to senior management from Southeastern trains.

The company is expecting to carry 70,000 spectators daily to the various Olympic events during the key weeks in July and August. There will be extra high speed trains, and extensions to regular services.

However, the company comes bottom of a customer satisfaction survey published in the magazine Which? today. Only 40% of Southeastern passengers are satisfied with the service and would recommend the company to a friend (08:39).

Shoppers in Folkestone will not have to pay for parking, following pressure from campaigners.

Shepway Council had drawn up options for a review of parking across the district, which included pay and display in the shopping streets of Folkestone, Hythe, Sandgate and New Romney.

But after local referendums and thousands of signatures opposing the move, the council has now withdrawn the option.

A review of parking is still underway, and there could yet be changes elsewhere (06:41 and 07:24).
