Missed hospital appointments in Kent is costing the NHS Β£13m

Should patients be fined for missing hospital appointments? Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent has learned that patients not showing up for booked consultations and treatment is costing the NHS in Kent more than Β£13m a year. Health experts say there are a wide range of reasons ranging from people not getting their letter in time, to fear and forgetfulness.

However, some politicians say the problem is so costly that patients who do not turn up should be fined.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent has kicked off the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with our own survey of the events local authorities in the county have planned to celebrate.

Whilst some areas have very definite plans for street parties, concerts and other events, others are still coming up with ideas, but only two or three have told us they have no plans to do anything special for the event at this stage.

Whilst some people are looking forward to getting involved in events in their own communities, there are others who believe we should not be celebrating at all.

Rail passengers travelling across the Romney Marsh face nine weeks of misery starting this morning, with the closure of the Ashford-to-Hastings line.

Network Rail says the Ore tunnel needs essential maintenance, and they might as well do some other work along the 26-mile line while they are about it, to avoid problems in the future.
