Two Kent hospitals' death rates among highest in country

The report also suggests patients are more likely to die if they are admitted at weekends.

Staff working for the UK Border Agency at Dover are warning politicians something will have to give, if they are asked to focus more resources on immigration control.

As MPs on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Affairs Select Committee contemplate what went wrong over the summer with the controversial relaxation of border checks, the border staff themselves say it is getting increasingly difficult for them to do their job well.

We have all seen the pictures of desperate people of all nationalities trying to clamber into lorries in Calais bound for Dover. Some are fleeing persecution, others are aiming to get to get to the UK for economic reasons. The problem has been with us for close on 20 years now and at its height 2,000 migrants were housed in a Red Cross camp at Sangatte.

Th site was closed by the French government and since then the would-be migrants have been dispersed all over the Calais area living in makeshift camps wherever they can find shelter. Aid agencies say the conditions in which they live are unacceptable.
