Too many barriers for Kent job seekers

Matt Davison sits in alongside John with the latest news, travel, and weather for Kent.

Kent's 13,000 job seekers are facing too many barriers in finding work. That is the view of one recruitment consultant, reacting to our story this morning about the stark difference in unemployment levels across the county. There are currently 10,000 vacancies in Kent, but in Thanet four people are chasing every job, whereas in Tonbridge and Malling there are two jobs for every one person who is unemployed.

Of course it is not very easy if you live in Thanet to take a job at the other end of the county. And there are other issues, like the rising retirement age which means people that do have jobs are in them for longer (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07.)

Canterbury could become Kent's first "Breastfeeding-Friendly City" after councillors were shocked at hearing about one new mother's experience. Twenty seven year old Louise Dancy wrote to them, expressing her disgust at the inadequate facilities available. She feels every mother has a right to expect better.

One of the people Louise wrote to was her ward councillor, Paula Vickers, who persuaded her fellow councillors to discuss the issue. Nothing has yet been decided, but Paula says she's optimistic (06:22, 07:22 and 08:22.)

Were you a master of recording mixtapes during your youth? In case you do not know, mixtapes were cassettes of favourite tunes put together for someone close to you.

Artist Esther Johnson, the latest guest in our series looking at teenage experiences, explains why making mixtapes was so important while she was growing up.

Her interview is part of a series on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent which is produced in partnership with Margate's new art gallery Turner Contemporary (06:27.)
