Government considers Kent airport plans

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

The government has confirmed for the first time it is considering plans for a new multi-runway hub airport in the south east.

An official announcement about the proposal is expected to be included in the chancellor's Autumn Statement this lunchtime.

Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party and Sevenoaks MP Michael Fallon confirmed the news to this programme this morning.

Thousands of public sector workers from teachers to immigration staff are expected to join picket lines in Kent tomorrow in protest at government plans to reform public sector pensions. The effects are likely to be varied as the government's contingency planning is put to the test.

The government has said it expects 90% of schools in the country to close. In Medway, so far, 30 schools have said they expect to be closed tomorrow, and another 27 partly closed. In Kent, 53 have said they are going to be closed, and another 48 partly closed.

Tonight a TV documentary will celebrate one of the most distinctive sounds of the 1960s, a sound that began right here in Kent. The Vox AC30 was a portable amp, made by Tom Jennings and Dick Denney in their factory in Dartford.

Music historians claim if it was not for this amplifier, The Stones, The Beatles and the Shadows would not have had the exciting sound which conquered the world.

Tonight on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One in the south east, a special programme will look at how an unlikely small company in unglamorous Dartford shaped the sound of the 60s, and it is narrated by Vox amp fan Ian Lee.
