New figures from the NHS body which monitors deaths in hospitals and those that happen within a month of treatment, show that more than 1,700 patients died following care at Medway Maritime Hospital, in the last financial year.

A ground-breaking project in Kent which works with whole families who are unemployed could be rolled out across the UK. The charity, Tomorrow's People, is assessing the results of an 18-month pilot scheme on Maidstone's Parkwood estate, which has high levels of deprivation.

It has been working with 15 families in the area with the aim of getting people off benefits and back into employment.

A life-size statue of a bomb disposal expert is being unveiled in Maidstone today. It cost Β£35,000 and was paid for partly by public donations. The bronze statue in Brenchley Gardens depicts a soldier from the 36 Royal Engineers, who are stationed in the town.
