Gravesham Council budget deficit

The Labour leader of Gravesham Council is blaming the Conservatives for leaving them in a financial mess after their election win in May.

The Labour leader of Gravesham Council is blaming the Conservatives for leaving them in a financial mess after their election win in May.

The council is expected to overspend its budget by Β£600,000 at the end of the financial year, and is considering compulsory redundancies, early retirement and raising parking charges to claw back the deficit.

Labour says the budget set by the Conservatives was unrealistic in the current economic climate. It says there was too much hope that big savings would be made by not replacing workers who left, but there has been a lack of staff turnover.. The council's also generated less money than predicted through parking fines and planning fees.

The Conservatives say Labour has taken too long to realise there is a problem and should have dealt with it sooner.

The owners of Dungeness Power Station have published plans to strengthen coastal defences, and protect the site from the threat of a tsunami. It involves shifting thousands of tonnes of shingle from the beach, but local fishermen fear the work could see them banned from the beaches each winter for the next 12 years.

Kent's most famous flying car is about to take to the air once more as Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is brought back to life in a sequel. The children's author Frank Cottrell Boyce has been commissioned by the Fleming family to start her up once more for a modern day family who find the old engine and unwittingly put in into a camper van.
