Managers say there has been a 25% drop in the number of fires since 2005, and there are too many fire engines in too many places. The plans will save Β£12m over the next three years, but there will be no compulsory redundancies.

One in 10 of us in the South East are working past 65 because we cannot afford to give up work. Some stay working because they want to, for others it is a necessity.

The group trying to revive the Dreamland fun park in Margate is worried that building a Tesco store on the seafront will make riding the the scenic railway a lot less scenic. It is the latest objection to the revamp of the area around Arlington House.

Developers want to build a new superstore and a 60-room hotel overlooking the seafront. It has been approved by Thanet Council but they have agreed to look again, because of the impact it could have on the listed scenic railway.
