Just after 8am on the 29th May 2008, the first of the coal tit chicks took a look out of the nest box. He may have looked like he was checking the weather, but as the report was nice and sunny, he was soon the first to take the leap and fledge. From then on there was a sudden rush when many of the chicks left together. But the eleventh chick, took a further two hours and lots of encouragement from its parents before it too took to the outside world. It's quite surprising to see so many young chicks survive to fledging, not all small birds are quite so lucky. he Springwatch camera teams got some pictures of the new chicks in the trees just after they left the nest, these young coal tits headed straight for the fir trees nearby, a typical place to find them.
