Exotic easterners
Some people simply see pheasants as food, best seen on a menu, but in the wild they add a glorious splash of colour to the countryside. When travellers first experienced the jungles and mountains of the Far East they were enchanted by the beautiful species of pheasants they encountered. Not surprisingly they brought some of them home, and our standard ring-necked pheasant is one of them. The pheasant does have a habit of frightening countryside walkers by launching from their hiding places in the long grass with a loud squawk, but its colours alone help put this bird on Bill Oddie's much loved alien invaders list.
