No trip to the park or woods would be complete without catching a glimpse of a squirrel. For many of us the squirrel we know is the grey, a confident little bounder and a delight to watch as it hunts the forest floor on an endless quest for nuts. But there is another: the rarer red squirrel, whose attributes go off the scale of delightful as they're smaller and much cuter than the introduced grey with their tufty ears. The dark side to squirrels falls heavily on the grey squirrels shoulders. Their biggest crime is that they can be quite aggressive and they are spreading like wildfire. Where the two species live together, the greys are out-performing the smaller, more delicate reds, our native and more vulnerable species. Greys also have a tendency to take nuts from the feeders we put out diligently for the birds. But if we can't thwart them, why not enjoy them and bring back the fun fact. It's their agility and ingenuity we love, so make it harder for them - whether you live with reds or greys, they're always a delight to see.
