There’s a shock for Ruth, and Freddie jumps to conclusions.
Freddie’s had an additional idea for Lower Loxley’s Halloween offering. As well as the planned movie night, a ghost stories tour. The thought came to him while listening to Bert’s poetry at last night’s Harvest Supper – Bert’s a great storyteller. He’s already asked Bert to lead the event and Bert’s said yes. Russ thinks it’s mad to run two events on the same night and Elizabeth insists that Freddie tells Bert the ghost stories won’t go ahead. Later, Freddie says he’s turned Bert down but in truth is yet to speak to him. When Lily reminds Freddie that it’s his mess to clear up, he changes tack and teases Lily about Russ’s tuition of Chelsea.
Ben’s considering different specialisms he could take as a nurse. He seeks guidance from Ruth on whether he would be good at working with elderly patients. She thinks he’s good with Jill and Leonard. Ben replies that he doesn’t see them as elderly and Ruth points out that’s a good thing. She invites him to join her in taking Bert for a pint to thank him for his help with clearing up after the Harvest Supper.
Ruth and Ben take turns to play cribbage with Bert and every time Bert wins until finally Ben beats him. They recount to Jolene how he then closed his eyes, but they think he’s only pretending to sleep to save himself from any more defeats. But then, Ruth calls over Jolene when Bert won’t respond. She thinks he’s dead.
