Pause For Thought
A few weeks ago I did something I haven’t done since school. It wasn’t sliding the tables back an inch every time the maths teacher turned his back, ending up with our desks flush against the wall. Nor was it sneaking sweets into church services. And neither was it the rebellious act (though to us only genius at the time) of bringing in a toasted sandwich maker, finding an empty classroom and transforming our humble cheese and tomato sarnies into golden, temptingly warm lunch treats. (I’m still so grateful that smoke alarm never did detect us!) It was, however, roller-blading.Â
A couple of decades ago I used to spend hours zooming around on a pair of inline skates – I loved it. But I’ve grown a little rusty on those underfoot wheels since and only just managed to avoid pavement tumbles. I’m a work in progress. Regardless of the grazed knee or three it might take to get there, I felt like this was the right moment, what with the gift of time some of us have been given, to ditch the relative comfort of a walk or a jog and instead attempt to glide my way back to the glory days of skating. (If not now, then when? and all that…) One of my favourite quotes of all time is attributed to the great Christian writer William Shedd. He said this: “A ship is safest in the harbour, but that’s not what a ship is built for.â€Â
At the moment, all of us have left the safety of harbour and life as we knew it. We’re uncomfortably out at sea. Whether making difficult decisions to help keep a business alive, turning hands to home schooling, or doing as Richie’s doing and getting the low down on a wholly different kind of travel – everything’s at sixes and sevens. Of course the image of leaving a safe harbour feels even more of a fit for essential workers, particularly our NHS staff. I believe these weeks/months are providing a pause to contemplate what we were (and weren’t) made for. What we long to rush back to and the stuff we’ll be lighter and brighter without. Perhaps it’s also who we were made for, as its clear that we were built for connection. That, and a spot of roller-skating!
