Pause For Thought
My wife and I had our first child 8 months ago, and so the silver lining of social distancing over the last few weeks is being able to spend a lot of time with him as he develops and learns new things. My dad sadly passed away in 2017 and this has meant that life for me is often bittersweet. On the one hand I have this amazing blessing of a son, but on the other hand my Dad doesn’t get to experience the joy of a grandchild.Ìý
Recently I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s possible to live in two places at one time. Joy and sadness. Hope and grief. Everywhere and nowhere. In my sadness and my grief I learn to look back and reflect on good times. In my joy and my hope I learn to look forward and be expectant for better days ahead. A fundamental part of my faith is believing that Heaven is a place that God has prepared for me and my loved ones.Ìý
That’s so important for me because it means that it’s not over. All is not lost. That completely changed how I look at the different situations that I’ve experienced. I used to get really upset every Father’s Day or on my Dad’s birthday because with every year that goes past, it felt like he was getting further away. But with my new perspective of heaven, I’m a bit more joyful on Father’s days and birthdays now because every year that goes by, I’m actually getting closer to seeing him again. I’ve been walking a lot more than usual recently and the other day I took my son out for a little stroll in the park. I had one of those days where life felt a little overwhelming, there was a little more sadness than joy, a little more grief than hope. I looked at my son and he chuckled back at me.Ìý
Not sure why, maybe I was having a bad hair day which seems to be every day at the moment. Anyway, as he chuckled, I thought, there it is!Ìý There’s the reminder. The reminder that even on the worst of days... there’s always something I can be grateful for. In this case, I was filled with extreme joy and excitement, considering the endless possibilities of what this little bundle of joy will grow up to achieve. It’s funny how focusing on the blessings in life can completely turn your day around for the better.
