Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:Ìý
At the moment, all of us are counting – the days, weeks, months that have passed since normal life was suspended and until it might resume.Ìý I find it amazing that time never seems to proceed at a regular pace – it either drags interminably or passes in a flash.Ìý I believe which of the two we experience is decided by how we use our time.Ìý Some of us will look back at this extraordinary period unable to explain how we managed to fill our time.Ìý For others it will hard to imagine that we could have achieved so much.Ìý I hope I’ll be in the second category.Ìý
Jewish practice provides a helpful way to think about the passing of time.Ìý From the great festival of liberation – Passover, now six weeks ago, we count 49 days to Pentecost, in a week’s time, when we will re-enact the revelation when the Israelites stood at Mount Sinai and received the 10 Commandments and the Torah from God.Ìý This process is known as counting the Omer.Ìý Each evening, we mention how many days and weeks have elapsed since the count started.Ìý So last night, Jews all over the world announced: ‘today is 42 days, making six weeks of the Omer’.ÌýÌý
And tonight, we will announce: ‘today is 43 days, making six weeks and one day of the Omer’.Ìý You get the idea! The concept is simple – we travel from liberation to revelation with growing excitement, so we count the days.Ìý The trouble is, most of us would count the number of days left – how many sleeps until the big day, as it were.Ìý But Jews count the number of days since liberation instead.Ìý I think this teaches a profound idea – sometimes when we can’t wait for a birthday, a wedding or a pay-rise, we wish away the days, hardly noticing them at all in our excitement.Ìý But every day is a profound gift, which we need to use – not merely fill – to its best.Ìý So despite our excitement, we count the days that have passed. There are encouraging signs that very slowly normality is starting to return.Ìý I hope that we will soon be able to share our time in person, but meanwhile, I’ve trying to experience every day – and week – as precious.
