Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:Μύ
My parents had a knack for moaning. Being the youngest child and the only girl, there was a particular stream reserved for me, normally sermonised proficiently by my mother. I was too young to consider the gender norms which dictated how I should behave as a girl, back then we lacked β€˜the woke’ vocabulary to describe this phenomenon, I was simply a Tomboy, and a scruffy one at that. My mum may have been successful in putting me in pristine frilly white dresses with ribbons and matching long socks, but I would never look good in them,Μύ and that made me glad because on rare occasions I was allowed to sport the outfit of my choice while all the other kids were dressed up.Μύ
At parties I was the girl hiding in the corner secretly eating mud, I was the kid who started a snail rescue sanctuary in my bedroom in an attempt to save the snails from getting crushed. There weren't a lot of activities that I took up for myself which my parents encouraged me to pursue, mainly because my choice often meant broken glass or grounded in grass stains, but one activity we all agreed on was biking, but the day my stabilisers got removed, I was petrified. I tried a thousand times, and only managed to go round in circles, at the point of giving up, my mum demanded I continueΜύ β€œshe said the only thing we have is this very moment, and at this moment I won’t allow you to stop,Μύ moaning even when I’m scared I thought.Μύ
Skip 20 plus years, the other day I purchased my first bike since childhood a wobbly me got on and then immediately got offΜύ on approaching the main road, the first thought was fear, the secondΜύ was the words of African American rapper Yasiin Bey: he said You better hold this very moment very close to you, don't be afraid, to let it shine… My Umi said shine your light on the world Shine your light for the world to see Umi means my mother in Arabic, it took 20 plus years and 2 bikes to realise my mother”s moaning was not moaning at all, it was preparation for me to face my fears and shine.
