Coastal gardening, roasting cauliflower and harvesting autumn fruit

How to overcome the challenges of seaside gardening, a contemporary take on cooking cauliflower, the best way to harvest and store autumn fruits and tips for winter greenhouses.

If you thought the challenges of seaside gardening were all about salt-laden winds and the chill of an east-coast haar, you’d better watch out for low-flying fishing buoys and flounders on your patio…!

Nicola Singleton visits Ruth Robinson and Calum Cheape’s garden in Pittenweem to discover the challenges – and unexpected benefits – of gardening in a coastal setting. Nicola offers advice on the kind of salt-tolerant plants we can grow to withstand harsh seaside winds and hears how Calum and Ruth deal with the the chill of an east coast haar.

Calum describes their various growing successes – including the exotic-sounding Italian veg agretti – while Ruth explains what they like to cook with their fruit, veg and herbs.

As fruit trees across the country become laden with ripe fruit, Gerben De Vries from Newburgh Orchard shares tips on how best to harvest and store our autumn plums, pears and apples.

Cauliflower is bang in season right now but there’s so much more to it than cauliflower cheese. Chef Graeme Pallister shows the Kitchen Café’s Jenny MacPherson how to make an impressive but simple cauliflower dish that requires you carve it!

Nicola finds out Ruth and Calum’s plans for their new greenhouse and suggests some additional uses for our greenhouses over the winter.
