Mark John has been an Anglican priest for nearly 30 years. 聽For most of that time, he has worked as a prison chaplain - first in Swansea, then Usk, Prescoed, Cardiff and most recently as managing chaplain for the new super prison in Wrexham, HMP Berwyn.

Vigorous, earthy and passionate about rugby, over the years he has been a regular contributor to All Things Considered, with a fund of stories, and firm views on a range of issues, not least the treatment of those who end up behind bars.

Earlier this year, Mark John was diagnosed with brain cancer. 聽He has been told now that the illness is terminal - and recently he got in touch with All Things Considered, eager to share the insights he believes this new experience has given him.

When he came into our studio, Mark talked about the impact the cancer is having on him, his family and on his faith, but Roy Jenkins began by asking him why he had first been attracted to ministry in prisons.
