The Servant Queen

The Servant Queen

On the 21st April, The Queen becomes 90 - yet another milestone for the longest reigning monarch in Britain’s history.Β

The national service of thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral in the summer will be an appropriate celebration for a person who has left us in no doubt that she’s been sustained by a deeply held Christian faith, as her Christmas broadcasts have regularly made clear.Β

And so this week we explore what we know of the Queen’s faith, what it means to her and how she’s lived it out in public and in private.Β Β  How does she approach one of the many roles which go with the job - Supreme Governor of the Church of England?Β  And to what extent is she regarded as a religious figurehead, as well as head of state?

Roy Jenkins is joined by:

Mark Greene, Executive Director of the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity and co-author of the book β€œThe Servant Queen and the King She Serves” published for this birthday;

the Rev. Dr. Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister and Superintendent of Wesley’s Chapel, President of the Boys’ Brigade of which Her Majesty is Patron;

by Bishop James Newcome, The Clerk of the Closet, who advises on the appointment of royal chaplains, presents bishops for homage to the sovereign and examines any theological books to be presented to her;

and by The Rev. Canon Dr. Sarah Rowland Jones, Vicar of the City centre Parish of St. John the Baptist in Cardiff, a former Foreign Office diplomat.
