Artist in Residence

Chris introduces Radio 2's Artist in Residence, Dundee contemporary choreographer Tommy Small.

It's a magical Monday as we go up, up and away with the delightful Daniel from North Shields, who tells us about his very first experience in a hot air balloon...

Chris adds a splash of colour as he introduces Radio 2's Artist In Residence. It's the contemporary choreographer from Dundee, Tommy Small...

And we learn more about the interesting Indian instrument the tabla and it's infiltration into popular music courtesy of the tapping tabla tutor, Rohan Kapadia.

Today's show is dedicated to anyone who danced with Chris on Saturday night at the Take That gig...
And today's show is entitled: before you get up and jump out of bed, allow this thought to creep in your head. List all the things you're grateful for, then jump in the shower and skip out the door!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:

When a friend asked if I was back to full fitness after recent surgery I didn’t know the answer. The symptoms of the tumour came on very gradually. Only when it was finally diagnosed did I suddenly realise I’d felt unwell for some time and had lost sight of what full fitness looks like. Training to run the Windsor half marathon with you, Chris, is giving me the chance to assess how fit, or otherwise, I am and to sort that out. I think the same dynamic may play out psychologically and spiritually, as well as physically. Over the course of our lives everyday knocks can chip away at our humanity without us noticing the change. Gradually we become less open and more cynical, less generous and more selfish or less adventurous and more set in our ways. In our places of work corrupt corporate practices may compromise our own ethics. Because we need the job we may turn a blind eye to what’s happening or find ways of justifying it. Imperceptibly over time we become less of the person we have it in us to be. I’m reminded of a signpost in sub-Saharan Africa. It stands on the outskirts of a town where the dirt track heads out into the bush. ‘Choose your rut carefully,’ it reads, ‘you will be in it for the next 500 miles!’ Thankfully it doesn’t have to be that way with the psychological or spiritual ruts we often unconsciously create for ourselves. Religious traditions have always included ‘time outs’ for members to undertake a little self-auditing. In Christianity Lent and Advent offer that opportunity, but the summer is also a good time to stop and take stock of who we have become and whether we need to undergo a little retraining in the art of being human and humane. Getting out of a rut takes time and effort but that’s a small price to pay for rediscovering what we’ve lost along the way of life and putting things right.
