Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

Last Saturday, the weekly Torah reading in our synagogue told the story of the twelve spies sent by Moses to check out β€˜the promised land’, to see if it was safe for the Israelites to journey into it and conquer it. Ten of the twelve brought back a false report, saying how difficult it would be: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are very powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there (that’s giants)."Β  So the people were persuaded that it wasn’t possible to take the land. And the entire nation had to wander in the desert for 40 years as a punishment. Only Joshua and Caleb brought back good news.

The rabbis have always described the pessimists as sinners and the optimists as heroes. But some modern interpretations question that. What if, as some modern thinkers suggest, all the spies were right, not just the optimists, Joshua and Caleb? β€œWhat if, together, the pessimists and optimists present a realistic picture of what the Israelites were facing?” And the prospect was terrifying.

It would be. They were migrants facing a 40 year journey. They were frightened of going forward- after all, what awaited them? Giants? And they were terrified of going back to slavery. Perhaps that’s the story of all migrants and refugees. The journey forwards is terrifying- think overcrowded and barely seaworthy boats on the Mediterranean, being locked below deck, and knowing many people have drowned in the attempt. But going back is terrifying too- think civil war, famine, and, for some, the threat of being murdered by ISIS. So, if we read the 12 spies’ story differently, maybe it will help us read what’s happening in our day. The journey forward for migrants and asylum seekers is taking a huge and fearful risk. When we see fear and desperation in migrants’ eyes, it’s because both forwards and backwards are terrifying prospects. And maybe the spies felt the same. That fear both ways should certainly give us pause for thought.
