Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister: Β  Β  Β Β

How surreal can things get? There I was, sitting on the red benches in the House of Lords minding my own business. Well not exactly my own business – I was about to speak in a debate and was a little nervous about it. I was going to speak without notes, always a nerve-wracking thing to do, and my head was filled with the ideas I was trying to lick into shape. At the same time, I had half an ear for the speaker on his feet at that time. And that’s when it happened - a text asking me whether I could come in to do this morning’s Pause for Thought. I shouldn’t really have read it – it could have waited until after my speech. But I did and I found my poor old brain suffering from overload. In the end, by dint of extra-territorial powers (another way of saying β€œprayer”), I managed to banish Pause for Thought from my head, delivered my speech and sent a holding reply saying I’d do it. And here I am. The debate was on the subject of β€œWho is my neighbour?” and had been instigated by one of the bishops. It’s the question with which the parable of the Good Samaritan ends – was it one of the religious dudes who saw a poor man in distress but decided to pass him by? Or was it the foreigner, a business man, who stopped and did his best? A neighbour is more than someone who lives over the fence or round the corner. A neighbour is someone who may or may not know you but who’d come to your help if needed. And the world would be aΒ  better place if all of us could behave like that.

That’s a good message for anyone with ears to hear – listeners to this programme, members of the House of Lords, Chris Evans, Joss Stone, Boris Becker, Gary Barlow, Stephen Merchant and Leslie Griffiths included.Β
